In order to get a full picture of watershed conditions, the council set up monitoring sites throughout the watershed, and has been monitoring these sites since 2008. A Water Quality Report was compiled that includes each site being monitored. Each were monitored for water quality parameters (DO, pH, turbidity, conductivity), temperature, and basic site conditions such as canopy cover, vegetative community compositions, and observations of in-stream conditions. Basic macro invertebrate samples were taken at select sites within identified salmonid refugia areas. Total coliform and E. coli samples were taken at select sites with potential point or non point source contamination. The Council has  been working with interns, volunteers, and school groups to collect the site information. School groups and volunteers  adopted specific areas of the watershed and Council staff covered the remaining sites. Council staff works with agency staff from the Oregon DEQ to calibrate equipment and conduct quality control of collection techniques. The Council also partnered with the City of Scappoose to process the bacteria samples.

Local Water Quality Monitoring

The Council has successfully marshaled the resources to complete two assessments (watershed and fish barrier) and implement a series of restoration projects; as we have moved our efforts to the next level of scientific rigor  a comprehensive evaluation of watershed conditions were needed. The Council has looked towards planning and implementing projects that have large-scale impacts on the watershed. We have continued to seek the resources to conduct both baseline studies of areas in anticipation of these projects, and status and trends studies of changes in the watershed over time.
